How can you consistently compare storage products based on performance
and price-performance?
SPC benchmark results provide that information for a wide range of
storage products. Each SPC-1 and SPC-2 result has been both audited and
peer reviewed for compliance to ensure consistency.
An Executive Summary and Full Disclosure Report (FDR) for each SPC
benchmark result is available for download and review. SPC membership is
not required for access to those documents.

Initial SPC Component-Level Benchmark Results (SPC-1C/SPC-2C)
Seagate has submitted the first set of SPC-1C and SPC-2C benchmark results. SPC-1C and
SPC-2 are the first industry-standard, component-level benchmark
specifications, based on the corresponding SPC-1 and SPC-2 workloads. The two benchmarks provide
end-users, vendors, resellers, and integrators the ability to evaluate and
compare the performance of individual storage components such as storage
devices, host bus adapters (HBAs), intelligent enclosures, and storage
software such as Logical Volume Managers. A presentation with
additional details describing SPC-1C and SPC-2C is available for
download.
SPC Benchmark 3BRTM (SPC-3BR)
Draft Specification
Public Review Version
SPC Benchmark 3™ (SPC-3) consists of a content model and related suite of
benchmarks. The benchmarks will be focused on the performance aspects of
storage management, hierarchical storage management, content management, and
information lifecycle management. The first benchmark in that suite is SPC
Benchmark 3BR™ (SPC-3BR).
SPC-3BR is a content management benchmark to measure to the performance of
backup/restore solutions. Execution of SPC-3BR consists of a two-step
process. First, a data repository is populated as required by the SPC-3
content model. Then, the performance of a backup/restore solution is measured
by executing a complete backup of the populated data repository and the
corresponding complete restore from that backup.
The public review version of the draft SPC Benchmark 3BR™ (SPC-3BR)
specification is available for download in the Specifications section of the website. If you would like to be
notified as SPC-3BR reaches major milestones, please register to be included on the SPC
Interest mailing list.
If you are interested in the ongoing development of the SPC-3 content model
and and related suite of benchmarks, you should consider joining the SPC. SPC membership will give you access
to the Members portion of the SPC website. There you will find benchmark
specifications (official and draft), access to all SPC benchmark tools,
minutes from SPC meetings, proposals for future benchmark development, and
much more.
SPC at CMG'07
The SPC participated in the 33rd International Computer Measurement Group
(CMG) Conference, CMG'07. The conference was held December 2-7, 2006 in
San Diego, California. The SPC panel presentation covered the following
topics:
- Overview of the SPC.
- An update of SPC-1 and SPC-2 plus the status of SPC-2 public
availability.
- The status of the new SPC
component-level benchmarks (SPC-1C and SPC-2C), which are in the final
stage of SPC approval.
- An introduction to SPC Benchmark 3™ (SPC-3) and SPC-1BR, which is the first benchmark in the SPC-3 suite of
benchmarks.
The CMG'07 presentation is available for viewing and download in the
SPC Press Room.
SPC-2 Toolkit Available for Pre-Order
The SPC-2 Toolkit is now available for pre-order in the SPC Store. Pre-order customers will be notified, via
email, prior to the actual shipping date.
Public availability of SPC Benchmark 2™ (SPC-2) and the SPC-2 Toolkit was
announced in a December 6, 2006 press
release. An overview of SPC-2 is available on the SPC-2 Results page. The
SPC-2 specification was approved and toolkit released to SPC member companies
in November 2005. The initial set of SPC-2 Results were announced in December
2005 at that year's Computer Measurement Group conference (CMG 2005).
